When it comes to Coronavirus, there are many discussions and opinions given about what would be best for Brazil and for the world. In truth, it's safe to say there is no single answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let's draw a parallel between the issues faced. On one hand, we have the so-called "post-apocalyptic economic fear," and on the other, "family insecurity.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conjectures discussed here could be elaborated upon in countless pages. However, for now, the aim is simply to present, in a concise summary, the superficial situation of the entrepreneur, as well as that of his human capital \u2013 the employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a major issue to be discussed, given that many companies don't know the best course of action. Measuring how long they will have to endure losses is the big unknown. If we're talking about a global lockdown for a period of one month, the business owner could take path "a". However, if it's two months, path "b", or "c", or "d" will be adopted, respectively for the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In truth, even though business owners are already accustomed to legal uncertainty, the fact is that the COVID-19 case has shattered all the paradigms that had been overcome throughout the dark years since the Brazilian regulatory framework was established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving away from the world of ideas and towards practical application, many legal and economic experts, as well as intellectuals and columnists, have commented on the topic of COVID-19. Regarding the topic at hand, tax expert and professor Dr. Fernando Facury Scaff concluded that "(...) industries are slowing down (...). This points to less revenue throughout the economic chain of goods and services. There will be a substantial drop in the national GDP, which will impact public accounts and the whole of society. It will not only affect Brazil, but the entire world. This is a pandemic, which does not respect national borders. Companies will suffer heavily from the effects of the crisis. Unfortunately, with lower revenue, there will be less money to pay current expenses, many of which will be postponed."\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it appears, even if the "hit is successful," it is important for the entrepreneur to establish a good line of commercial communication with their creditors and debtors, whether it be a business partner, supplier, national or international, or even a bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scaff also emphasizes that "The priority should be salaries and preserving the team \u2013 after all, this crisis will pass and business will return to normal, making it necessary to preserve human capital."\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, the business owner should adopt measures that allow them to absorb the partial impact of costs throughout this recession period, encouraging employees to strongly adopt teleworking and online sales, reassigning teams previously involved in other activities to this business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also those who believe that debt restructuring will occur between creditors and debtors in the private sphere, adjusting procedures and payment methods, such as the exclusion of interest. Remember that in many negotiations you will be the creditor, but in others, the debtor. Be flexible with those who also grant you benefits; this will make this period of commercial isolation and post-traumatic recession less painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the tax sphere, albeit timidly, several governments are studying and adopting measures to postpone the collection of certain taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From another perspective, Thomas L. Friedman, an American journalist and current columnist for The New York Times, had an article published on the topic on March 22, 2020: \u201cA Plan to Get America Back to Work\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always in a bold and often quite controversial manner, he delivered a raw and unfiltered analysis of the country's potential economic collapse, as dramatic as that caused to the population by the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friedman primarily emphasizes the fact that we must be wary of "groupthink" and that even "small wrong choices can have big consequences."\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big question he raised is how to be forceful in combating the virus while simultaneously allowing people to return to work safely as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a quote referring to Dr. John PA Ioannidis, epidemiologist and co-director of the Stanford Center for Innovation in Meta-Research, Friedman highlights the point about the 1% or less case fatality rate for the virus, based on studies conducted to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this perspective, the consequences of a complete shutdown of the economic system would generate not only financial chaos for a long period, but also deaths resulting from other situations that would be left unattended due to the exclusive attention focused on the Coronavirus, such as a person suffering a stroke or having to postpone chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, the discussion is valid and very important, but, as we can see, scientific and technical evolution, day after day, will dictate the main rules to be adopted by society in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
